A fresher resume has to do a harder job than an experienced one. There is no work history to lean on, so the reader judges you on your academic record, what you built, and how clearly you set it out. Formatting carries more weight than most graduates expect.
This is the section order that reads correctly for campus placements, walk-in drives and job portals alike, along with what belongs in each section and what to leave out.
Section order that works
-
01
Header
Full name, phone with country code, a plain email address, city and LinkedIn. No photograph unless the employer asks for one.
-
02
Career objective
Two lines. Name the role you want and the qualification that supports it. Avoid asking for "a challenging position in a reputed organisation".
-
03
Academic record
Degree, college and university, year of passing, and CGPA or percentage. Class 12 and Class 10 with board and percentage below it.
-
04
Skills
Grouped, not a single long line. Technical skills first, tools second, and only skills you can be questioned on.
-
05
Projects
Two to four. Title, your role, what it does, and one measurable result.
-
06
Internships and training
Company, dates, and what you actually produced. Even a six-week training counts if you describe an output.
-
07
Certifications
Course name, issuing body, year. NPTEL, cloud fundamentals and platform courses all belong here.
-
08
Achievements and responsibilities
Ranks, prizes, scholarships, class representative, event coordination.
-
09
Personal details and declaration
Only where they are expected. Many private-sector recruiters no longer want them; most colleges and public-sector forms still do.
How to write the academic record
Put your highest qualification first and work backwards. Each line needs the qualification, the institution with its affiliating university or board, the year of passing and the result.
Write the result with its scale so nobody has to guess: 8.42/10 rather than 8.42, and 84.6% rather than "first class". If your CGPA is weak and the employer has not set a cut-off, you can leave the number out and let the rest of the page carry the application. If a cut-off has been published, include it, because it will be verified anyway.
Projects are your experience section
A recruiter reading a fresher resume is looking for evidence that you have finished something. Give each project a real title, say what your part was in a team, and end with a number: users, records processed, accuracy, minutes saved.
One line describing the work and one line describing the result beats five lines of technology names. Put the stack in your skills section instead.
One page, and why it matters
With no employment history, a second page is almost always padding, and padding reads as inexperience. Cut hobbies that say nothing, school-level prizes if you have college ones, and any section with a single weak entry.
Mistakes that cost interviews
- A generic objective that would fit any candidate applying for any job.
- Listing every subject studied instead of the skills the job asked for.
- Marks written without a scale, so 8.4 could be out of 10 or out of 4.
- An email address made in school. Use firstname.lastname.
- Tables, columns and text boxes in a resume that will be uploaded to a job portal.
- A photograph pasted in when the employer never asked for one.
Questions people ask
Should a fresher resume be one page or two?
One page. Without work experience, a second page is filled with material that weakens rather than strengthens the application. Use it only if you have publications, patents or several substantial internships.
Do freshers need a declaration on the resume?
It depends on the employer. Colleges, public-sector recruiters and many traditional companies still expect a signed declaration with place and date. Private-sector and IT recruiters usually ignore it, and it is not a mistake to leave it out for them.
Should I write CGPA or percentage?
Write whatever your institution issued, with the scale attached. If your college prints both, use the one the job advertisement asks for, and keep the same measure for every entry so the record is comparable.
Is a photo required on a fresher resume?
Not for private-sector applications, and it can cause an ATS to misread the header. Include one when the employer or application form explicitly asks for it.
What if I have no internship at all?
Lead with projects and coursework, then certifications. A well-described academic project with a measurable outcome works harder than an internship described in vague terms.
